The approach is based on a classical machine learning method, the Self-Organizing Map, SOM (Kohonen, 2001). The SOM combines many of the properties of other techniques and shares many commonalities with two standard methods for data projection (the Principal Components Analysis, PCA; Jolliffe, 2002) and clustering (the K-means; Hartigan and Wong, 1979).
