This chapter explores the evolution of textual and literary criticism in popular culture studies and related fields. The next few pages will review the key ideas that shape the way scholars understand texts; using a roughly chronological approach, we will consider some of the major approaches to textual criticism, their strengths and weaknesses, and the way they have influenced (or been influenced by) popular culture studies. We won’t resolve the question of whether the contractors in Return of the Jedi were innocent victims or casualties of war, but we’ll explore some methods by which you might answer that question for yourself.
