The influence of the code was extended by the international nature of the library and by the despatch of printed cards, and the code is still used in the Vatican Library. It will be interesting to see, however, whether the Vatican will succumb to the widespread acceptance of the Paris Principles when it next revises its rules. Catalogue could be closed and perhaps printed or photographed: although many libraries do not like this idea, it is perhaps not a bad one since a catalogue grows in complexity as it grows in size and division by date conveniently separates enquiries for current literature from enquiries for older material. The new rules could be adopted only when they do not conflict with existing headings in the catalogue (a "no conflict" or "superimposition" policy) or they could be interfiled with the old entries and linked where necessary by see also references.
